I am looking for a game that will allow me to have an rpg adventure in a fantasy world with an interesting class system. What I basically want is DnD, but with a more set template, and no heavy preparations that are needed from a DM.
After doing some research 2 games kept popping up: Gloomhaven and Descent 2e.
What I like about Descent 2e is the dice system. I enjoy the feeling of attacking a monster, and not being sure how effective my attack will be or if it will even hit. To my understanding a bit of this random nature is still present in Gloomhaven, but to a lesser extent in the form of attack modifiers. How big is the effect these modifiers have?
A benefit that Gloomhaven seems to have is that there is more going on than just the dungeons. You are part of a living world. That is both something that attracts me, but also scares me.
I have no experience with Legacy games at all, and the concept seems really intrigueing, but what worries me is replayability.
What if I don't have a set playgroup? What if people drop in and out quite often? Will I have the option to do a reset of the game or will I be pretty much screwed?
And my final question: How would you compare the classes / party roles between Gloomhaven and Descent 2e?
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
